Boy in the Earth Statue posture.
The Earth Statue Exercise
This, like many of the exercises posted on this blog, is not actually a magical operation. It is a mystical practice. Mysticism is awesome for developing sensitivity to subtle energies, and there are some excellent elemental exercises from the mystical traditions of the east and the west.
This is an easy exercise for channeling, experiencing, and attuning to the essence of elemental earth. Use it before or during magic of earth, sure, but above all practice this a couple of times per week to enhance your sensitivity to, and ultimately your command over elemental earth.
Standing or Sitting
Experienced practitioners who just want the brief instructions click here.
If you are fairly new to magic and mysticism I urge you to read the article. It takes less than five minutes.
Set your intention to become a channel for earth energy. You wish to be one with elemental earth and understand it better.
This exercise was originally created for a standing posture but can be done seated as well. Here is the positioning for each; before enacting you should execute cleansing breaths or your choice of progressive relaxation.
Standing PostureBack is straight Feet slightly wider than shoulders Shoulders and hips aligned. kness slightly bent. Hands hang comfortably at side. Relaxed, weight settles into hips, then thighs. |
Sitting PostureSit on front/end of chair, not leaned back or deep back onto the cushion or pad. Rest your butt just on the edge if possible. Back is straight Feet directly below knees Shoulders and hips lined up. Hands palms down on top of thighs. Relaxed, weight falls to butt and hips. |
Stable Breathing
Breathe evenly; in through your nose and out through your mouth. Don't force it, but try to let your breathing settle into a stable pattern.
Ideally, see your breath moving in a circle, into your nose and down the back of your windpipe, into the bottom of your lungs, up the front of your lungs, and back out your mouth.
Perfect form is the in and out breath merging into one another so you don't have sharp inhale, take air in then exhale, send air out. Instead, try to make a long, steady inhale that just turns into a long, steady exhale then repeat.
Take care to breathe slowly and make sure you are getting plenty of oxygen. If you feel light headed stop the circle breathing and just breath slowly and deeply in and out.

Notice how your body feels. Do you feel secure? Do you feel you have what you need in life?
The Base Chakra
After assessing your body and mental state, tune into the earth element by focusing briefly on your base chakra. This energy center is at the bottom of your spine and can often be sensed through your perineum. With eyes closed try to sense the base chakra in that area and it will likely respond to your probe with a subtle sensation.

The base chakra at the bottom of the spine. Try to feel it and it will respond like a beacon.
Tell the base chakra to bring more stable, earth energy into your aura and body. You can visualize the center as a glowing red sphere. This is the traditional color given to the charka by tantric and Yogic sources.
Keep breathing slow and steady, in a circle as described previously if you can.
In the western traditions we see earth energy as green, brown, olive, tan, and similar. The distinction to understand here is that western magic isn't talking about the chakra, it refers to elemental energy in shades of green and brown.
So there is no contradiction if you visualize the chakra as red. Having said that if you prefer a brown or brick-red go for it. Hell you can see it as green if you like but I don't know if that will help you activate the chakra because I have never tried this.
(Guess I should look into that and report back.)
The point is contact the base chakra, the root, as it is known and bring elemental earth energy into your energy field and body.
Make Yourself Heavy and Solid
Then, make yourself solid and heavy like a stone statue of yourself.
How? Imagine. Decide you are a stout, heavy stone statue and feel your weight sink down through your calves and to the bottom of your feet.
Feel yourself sinking an inch into the ground or floor. Be with this heaviness a few moments.
Just stand there, nice and straight, arms limp, feeling solid and heavy as stone.
After a time, produce the feelings of confidence, safety, and having plenty. Your are immovable, perfectly safe, and you have everything you need in life.
Remain like this for several minutes or as long as you can.
When ready to end the exercise, roll out your shoulders and neck, shake out your wrists, then release the heavy energy through your feet, out and into the ground. Lift each foot and shake it out thereafter.
Be sure to visualize the heavy stuff leaving your body before you walk away from this exercise.
Here are the Condensed Instructions for this Exercise.
Stand or sit up straight. Shoulders and hips even, feet slightly wider than shoulder width, relax.
Align your breath with a stable, steady rhythm. Count four on inhale, then four on exhale, without pausing between - if this makes you light headed just breathe at a steady rhythm and imagine the air making you heavier.
Imagine you are a stone statue, heavy, still, and immovable.
Notice your body. Do you feel safe? Do you feel you have all you need in life?
Focus on your base chakra. Be with it a moment.
Tell the chakra to bring powerful earth energy into your aura and body.
Sink your weight to your feet. Feel yourself sinking into the ground.
Feel safe. Feel strong. Feel that you have all you need in life.
(If none of this is true use your imagination and will to feel as if it is true!)
Sustain these feelings, safe, heavy, unmovable, for as long as you can up to ten minutes.
Release earth energy out your feet and into the ground, Let it all go.
Roll your neck, shoulders, shake out hands and arms and both feet.
