The Basis of Elemental Doctrine

The Elemental Codex is the doctrine of the elements expressed as a table of correspondences or as a fourfold dossier or in various other formats if I'm honest. There are numerous ways to display the material, but in essence it is a Three Key correspondence matrix.

These keys are:

1. Hierarchy of Frequency - Finest energy to densest energy or vice versa
2. Relative Dynamic - An element is defined in large part by its relationships with the other three elements.
3. Fractal System or Nested Hierarchies - Each element contains all four fundamental or elemental energies in some ration. Furthermore the factors or powers that make up the elements are all contained to some degree in each element.

This truncated codex of elements below demonstrates the first two keys explicitly by arranging the energies from highest to lowest vibration and by cascading the same categories down through each to show the relative nature of each correspondence. The third. key is implied by virtue of the relationships and can be extrapolated via the visual plane shown by the profile sets below.

Here is a very basic schema often-used to convey in somewhat abstract terms the nature of the five elements:

Here is another way to express the same essential idea or ideas:

Frequency	Element	State of Being	Metaphorical Quality
1 (Highest)	Ether	Pure Potential	The "Carrier Wave." It is the highest frequency because it has the least amount of "resistance" or mass. It is the raw data of the universe before it is filtered.
2	Air	Vibration/Thought	The first step into differentiation. It is "hearing"—the detection of a wave moving through space. It is fast, pervasive, and intangible.
3	Fire	Energy/Will	The "Radiative" frequency. It begins to create heat and light. It is the frequency of "Vision" and conversion—where potential starts to become kinetic.
4	Water	Relational/Flow	The "Fluid" frequency. It is slower and begins to take the shape of its container. It is the frequency of "Taste" and bonding—the attraction between particles.
5 (Lowest)	Earth	Material/Mass	The "Terminal" frequency. It is the lowest frequency because it is the most "bound." It is the frequency of "Smell" and physical resistance.

Always remember this site does not teach elementalism, or the belief that the esoteric elements are the physical materials they name. The elements are energetic qualities with traits that correspond to the material they are named for.

Ether

The primordial potential for energy - not "potential energy", the potential to become energy in the first place. Ether is the living spirit-medium that creates and flows through the other energies and ultimately takes them through the end of their cycle to return to the source, i.e. death and regeneration. 

Air

Air is differentiation. The first movement from undivided potential into distinction, pattern, definition, separation, articulation. The reference context for these traits is the mind or ideation -- form is identified and conceptualized but not made full.

Fire

Fire is activation. The ignition of motion, will, intensity, drive, change, initiation, the shift from possibility into force. The spark at the start of doing.

Water

Water is modulation. The shaping, blending, adjusting, harmonizing, responding, adapting, emotional or energetic contouring of activated force. This is erll into the working phase.

Earth

Earth is Termination. The settling, fixing, crystallizing, embodying, completing, grounding, the point where process becomes form. This is completion or making manifest.

It is only from the initial understanding of the hierarchy and relationships that we can progress our understanding into the various lists of corresponding feelings, actions, sensory perceptions, and so forth.
